On Saturday, November 24, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor (famines) - millions of innocent Ukrainians killed by the totalitarian communist regime.
The Holodomor Victims Remembrance Day is marked annually on the fourth Saturday of November under the presidential decrees of 1998 and 2007. In the 20th century, Ukrainians survived three famines - in 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and in 1946-1947. However, the most massive was the Holodomor of 1932-1933 - the genocide of the Ukrainian people, which was carried out by the totalitarian communist regime of the Soviet Union.
In November 2006, the Verkhovna Rada recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide against Ukrainian people.
In addition to Ukraine, 15 UN member states and the Vatican City State recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine of 1932-1933 an act of genocide.
On November 26, 2016, President Poroshenko signed a decree on events on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine - the genocide of the Ukrainian people", according to which the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor will be marked at the highest state level.
Nationwide events commemorating the Holodomor victims will be held throughout Ukraine and in many countries of the world.
At 16:00, along with a national minute of silence, the traditional "Light the Candle of Memory" initiative will take place. Everyone is welcome to light a candle and put it on a window sill (or a balcony), thus honoring the memory of the millions of Ukrainians who were killed by the famine in Ukraine.
